Puncture test

DIN 53142-2

The puncture test measures the energy required to puncture corrugated board. In the puncture test to DIN 53142-2, the use of a pyramid puncture head causes the material to be loaded in all spatial directions. During this process, combined tensile, compression, flexural and shear forces occur. The result obtained in this test is the energy absorbed in puncturing the material. A materials testing machine is used for this test.

Puncture Test with ZwickRoell

  • The results obtained with materials testing machines generally show significantly less scatter than those from the pendulum impact testers typically employed. The correlation with pendulum impact testers has been assessed in collaboration with the German Institute for Corrugated Cardboard Research and Testing (wfp) at 5% (standard deviation).
  • Other benefits of materials testing machines over pendulum impact testers (DIN 53142-1) include absence of weight changing, no distorting oscillations, no fiddling with retaining collars; electronic recording of force and travel and significantly larger measurement range.
  • Theoretically, materials from papers with a grammage of 80 g/m² right up to heavy-duty corrugated cardboard 17 mm thick and an energy of approx. 40 joules can be tested without retooling.
  • An additional benefit is that the machine pulls the pyramid back through the board with no difficulty after the test. A collar as with the pendulum impact tester is no longer required.
  • All these factors make the testing machine an easier and safer, and a more reliable option.

Testing machine with 4 measurement axes

Our static materials testing machines are designed for universal application. This makes it easy to implement individually tailored testing solutions in addition to our standard solutions.

With our AllroundLine materials testing machine with four measuring axes, all relevant tests for predicting the compression strength of cardboard can be determined in a single machine, and various tests can be performed in paper testing In this example,

  • the ECT, FCT, CMT and RCT crush tests are performed in the upper test area.
  • In the lower test area (from left to right), the SCT, the tensile test, and the 4-point flexure test are performed.
  • Expansion options through additional slots, extensometers, safety doors and other accessories.
